The study “Big State Issues Behind the Small Arms” analyzes the behavior of irregular  armed actors in the process of emergence and consolidation of contemporary states. First, the study reflects on the nature of such actors, sets out a proposal for their classification and formulates several hypotheses about state-building under external constraints. In order to test them, the following sections contextualize and develop a case study (Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, in the period 1992-2000). Final remarks summarize the main findings and sketch the potential scenario for the future state-making under strong media and judicial scrutiny.
